DNA extraction methods were evaluated for the yield and purity of DNA recovered from mycorrhized roots and whether the recovered DNA is suitable for amplification of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal SSU rDNA. The DNeasy Plant Mini Kit and three extraction buffers were used alone or in combination with either polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP) and/or activated charcoal (AC). Among the extraction methods tested, those based on the CTAB buffers yielded more DNA than those based on the TE buffer and the DNeasy Plant Mini Kit. Moreover, the use of AC alone or in combination with PVPP reduced DNA yield, while it significantly improved the purity of recovered DNA, whatever the extraction buffer. On the other hand, the success of... |

Brycinus epuluensis, new species, is described from the Epulu River, an affluent of the Ituri River (Aruwimi basin, Middle Congo basin, DR Congo). It most closely resembles the widespread species B. imberi from the nurse group, although it has a broad black mid-lateral band on the body, which is absent in B. imberi. This black band is, however, also present in specimens from the neighbouring population in the Ituri River itself. Brycinus epuluensis differs from the types of B. imberi and its five junior synonyms, as well as from the neighbouring Ituri population, mainly in having only 6 instead of 8 premaxillary teeth, arranged in a single row. This low number of premaxillary teeth is characteristic for species of the longipinnis group. However, B.... |

Understanding the relationship between sound-scattering layers (SSLs) and pelagic habitat characteristics is a substantial step to apprehend ecosystem dynamics SSLs are detected on echo sounders representing aggregated marine pelagic organisms. In this study, SSL characteristics of zooplankton and micronekton were identified during an upwelling event in two contrasting areas of the Senegalese continental shelf. Here a cold upwelling-influenced inshore area was sharply separated by a strong thermal boundary from a deeper, warmer, stratified offshore area. Mean SSL thickness and SSL vertical depth increased with the shelf depth. The thickest and deepest SSLs were observed in the offshore part of the shelf. Hence, zooplankton and micronekton seem to occur... |

The evolution of marine protected areas (MPAs) in West Africa is reviewed through a survey of managers' perception carried on between 2017 and 2018 for the establishment of the baseline of MPAs of the Network of Marine Protected Areas of West Africa (RAMPAO). Managers report that all natural habitats are subject to surface area losses. The most affected habitats were beaches, mudflats and estuarine channels, caused by erosion and rainfall deficit. Seagrasses, rocky bottoms and coral reefs also seem to be affected, but as they are not monitored and as the managers' knowledge is poor toward these habitats, changes are not properly recorded. Despite some damages, coastal forests seem to be the only natural habitat that see positive changes, mainly due to... |

The stock of the Senegalese flat sardinella, Sardinella maderensis, is highly exploited in Senegal, West Africa. Its growth and reproduction parameters are key biological indicators for improving fisheries management. This study reviewed these parameters using landing data from small-scale fisheries in Senegal and literature information dated back more than 25 years. Age was estimated using length-frequency data to calculate growth parameters and assess the growth performance index. With global climate change there has been an increase in the average sea surface temperature along the Senegalese coast but the length-weight parameters, sex ratio, size at first sexual maturity, period of reproduction and condition factor of S. maderensis have not changed... |
